Black history week
We each wrote down questions that we wanted to ask Ruby Bridges. We then did some hot seating where we answered questions in the role of Ruby.
Here are some of the questions we wanted to ask:
Were you scared?
How did it feel being the only girl in school?
Did you like your new school?
Were you mean back to the other children?

Black history week
We have been learning about Ruby bridges, a young black girl who was chosen to go to a white school in America in the 1950s. The other white children where taken out of school by their parents and Ruby walked to school with armed police through the crowds of shouting people. Eventually the white children started coming back to school and now schools are happily mixed.
Ask your child to tell you about what happened and how Ruby reacted.
We wrote a poem and performed it to the whole school:
Ruby Bridges
Don't be scared
Ruby Bridges
I will hold your hand
Ruby Bridges
She was kind
Ruby Bridges
You helped us
Ruby Bridges
Thank you for our school

We have been learning a poem about our senses.
Can your child sing this poem to the tune of 'This old man?'
With my eyes, I can see
Robins nesting in a tree
Chorus:
I can see and hear, and smell, and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much
With my ears, I can hear
Distant noises and sounds quite near
Chorus
With my nose, I can smell
Flowers the lady is trying to sell
Chorus
With my mouth, I can taste
Doughnuts, which are chocolate glazed
Chorus
With my eyes, I can see
Robins nesting in a tree
Chorus:
I can see and hear, and smell, and taste and touch
With my senses I learn so much
With my ears, I can hear
Distant noises and sounds quite near

Using our ears!
We have been thinking about what it would be like if our eyes didn't work and learning to listen carefully to the sounds around us. We have been listening to various sounds and trying to guess what they are. We also used blindfolds and had to listen to our partners instructions to guide us around an assault course.
Using our tongue
We have been learning about our senses. We tasted lots of foods from around the world, and thought of words to describe them. Thank you to those of you who brought food in for us to taste!
Dogger!
We have been reading the book Dogger by Shirley Hughes. We made puppets of the characters to help us retell the story in the correct order.
Self portraits
We have been looking in the mirror and painting self portraits. We made sure that both sides of our face were symmetrical and that we chose the right colours.
